Bought for a decent price in Rome in 1972, when both of us were there as promising Belgians about ten days invited guests at the Casa Belgica. Licentiate (Masters) of History of Art and Archeology at the University of Ghent, Belgium, and Masters of Fine Art, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
In 1968, after a period of four years during which he taught at the Lycée des Garçons in Sfax, Tunisia, Verhal went to Spain and Portugal with a stipend of the Belgian government. After that period he went to de USA, where he became a professor of painting at Washington University, St. Louis. There he obtained in 1970 the degree of Master of Fine Arts and taught there three years more graphic art. From 1973 to 1999 included he worked as a teacher of general history of art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at Ghent, Belgium. In the summers from 1974 to 1981 he gave several courses at the Portland School of Art, Maine, USA, and at the University of North-Carolina, Greensboro, North-Carolina, USA.
